Vaginal laser treatment: MonaLisa Touch

When our oestrogen level falls – for example, due to menopause or perhaps a treatment we have received (like tamoxifen for breast cancer) – it sometimes triggers reactions of various kinds. This happens whether we are 25 or 80, and many women suffer the discomfort in silence.

The membrane wall thins out, and that can lead to annoying symptoms like itching, stinging, a dry vagina or urinary incontinence. These problems can be distressing.

Vaginal laser rejuvenation is a fast, safe and convenient method now available to women with the above symptoms, especially if they are finding intercourse painful.

Laser therapy is also an effective way to deal with lichen sclerosus, which causes inflammation of the skin, especially around the vulva.

This procedure is non-invasive. It can be performed by your gynaecologist in about 5 minutes, and it is virtually pain-free. The patient does not need to take hormones, and the laser treatment has no side effects. Up to 90% of symptoms clear up after 3 sessions (see IRCCS, San Raffaele).

Menopause (hormonal diagnosis and therapy)

The menopause is a phase of life that brings both personal and bodily changes for many women. We are happy to advise and support you during this time. A central bodily change is the reduced hormone production of the ovaries. This can produce certain symptoms. In some cases, a change in daily habits or a herbal therapy is sufficient to alleviate symptoms. In others, hormone replacement therapy may be required.

We will select the right course of treatment for you individually.

Cancer screening, early detection and follow-up care

An important goal of practice is the early recognition of benign and malignant diseases affecting the female genitalia or breasts. Cancer screening includes vaginal inspection with the so-called PAP smear test and the examination of the breasts via palpation. We also offer oncological follow-up treatments according to medical guidelines.

Upon request, we offer further, modern tests to provide comprehensive cancer screening:

  • Ultrasound vaginal examination to inspect womb and ovaries
  • Ultrasound breast examination
  • Human papilloma virus (HPV) testing
  • Chlamydia testing
  • Ultra-sensitive PAP smear test (ThinPrep)
  • Immunologic faecal occult blood test
  • Test for bladder cancer

Unfortunately, these extra services are not covered by public health insurance.

Vaginal Discomfort

Before each therapy, the personal discussion between doctor and patient is very important. In my practice in Berlin you can speak to me very openly about your concerns and wishes. Based on your individual findings, I will discreetly and honestly inform you about the therapeutic options for vaginal complaints and inform you from woman to woman in detail about the procedure, the special features and the possible side effects of the MonaLisa Touch® treatment.

Psychosomatic issues

Genital diseases are usually a major burden for those affected. Women suffering from inflammation, itching, burning or pain in the genital area are often reluctant to speak openly about the problems or to seek help. One of the most common inflammatory skin diseases of the vulva is the so-called lichen sclerosus (LS).

Contraception

Women’s contraceptive needs change over the course of their fertile years. Our goal is to provide you with the best method of contraception according to your wishes and concerns.

Some available methods:

  • different oral contraceptives (pill)
  • Nuvaring (ring releasing hormones via the vagina)
  • contraceptive plaster
  • three-month injections
  • hormonal IUD (Mirena, Yaydess)
  • copper IUD

We are happy to offer comprehensive advice regarding all methods.

Prenatal care

Pregnancy is a very special time and we are happy to support you through it. Alongside the standard screenings recommended in the national pregnancy guidelines, we offer additional ultrasound, smear and blood tests on request (including infectious serology to exclude or detect infections that could endanger your child, swab test for beta-haemolysing streptococci, and 3D imaging).

Consultations for teenagers and young women

Teenagers and young women are welcome to come to us and discuss questions about bodily changes, menstruation, sexuality and contraception – either alone or accompanied by their boyfriend, girlfriend or mother. We take the time for your questions and treat everything we discuss completely confidentially. Your first appointment should let you get to know the practice in a relaxed fashion. The first gynaecological examination comes only later, unless you have any medical complaints.

We would also be pleased to inform you about sexually transmitted diseases and the HPV vaccination.
